The arsonist who set fire to a public bus in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in January Air Force 1 Wheat , killing 18 people and injuring 32, was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of Yinchuan on Sunday.

According to the verdict released on the Yinchuan government's official Sina Weibo account on Sunday, Ma Yongping, 33, got on Bus 301 from Majiazhai station in Helan county Air Force 1 Flyknit , Ningxia at 6:30 am on January 5.

As the bus passed a furniture store en route to Yinchuan Railway Station, Ma intentionally used his lighter to ignite two bottles of gasoline that he was carrying in a plastic bag.

The fire quickly turned the bus into an empty shell, killing 18 people and injuring 32. Ma escaped the fire by jumping out of the window on the vehicle's left side, behind the driver. He was arrested at around 4:20 pm the same day.

Local police said that Ma set the bus on fire to express his discontent with an unresolved financial dispute with a construction contractor.

According to a list provided by local authorities to the Xinhua News Agency in January, the victims were mostly young people Air Force 1 Mid , including ten between the ages of 20 and 35.

Nine of the victims were women, and 14 were local residents of Ningxia, according to the list.

The families of 17 victims who died in the arson attack were promised 750,000 yuan ($112,702) each in compensation from the bus company Air Force 1 High , according to the local government.

The defendant pleaded guilty and showed repentance during the open trial, which was heard by the Yinchuan court on June 15, Xinhua reported.

Ma was also deprived of political rights for life, said the verdict.

Ma stated in court that he will file an appeal.
