ASTANA£¬ Kazakhstan£¬ July 18 (Xinhua) -- Three policemen and one civilian were killed in an armed attack gunman in the southern Kazakh city of Almaty on Monday£¬ said the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The incident happened at around 11:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT)£¬ when an armed man was trying to enter a local police office and opened fire on a policeman£¬ said a statement from the ministry.

The gunman then seized the automatic weapon of the policeman and tried to flee. He shot four policemen with the stolen weapon during the escape attempt£¬ and was later wounded and subdued.

"The offender tried to grab a car from a local resident of the city during the flee. As a result the driver was wounded and died. Three police officers died from serious wounds£¬" the statement said.

Almaty city has raised its terror threat level to critical and launched a counter-terror operation to track down an accomplice of the gunman.
